Moving to LagosWeekend Trips
Abeokuta
Abeokuta is a smaller town in between Lagos and Ibadan that’s very historic. Don’t miss visiting the Obasanjo Presidential Library. It is extremely high quality – maybe the best museum in Nigeria. A walk up to Olumo Rock and a visit to the Adire marke is a must. For food we’d recommend Tamberma. The Radisson is probably the best hotel.
Ibadan
If you’re looking for more of a break from Lagos, you might also consider traveling a bit further north (about 3 hours) to Ibadan, Nigeria’s 3rd largest city. There’s a train that’s very nice and scenic but if you don’t have an NIN (National Identification Number) you will struggle to get tickets. The train leaves from the Mobolaji Johnson station in Yaba in the morning and evening.
Otherwise, you can hire a car or bus to drive you. I’ve used Trip a Treat and Nikky Taurus before (just whatsapp them for a quote).
You can stay at the International Tropical Institute of Agriculture (IITA) in their conference center hotel. It’s a working research center but the grounds are extremely beautiful and very relaxing. There’s also tennis, golf, and forest hiking available. Email IITA-reservations@cgiar.org to secure a reservation. The rooms are affordable and the food on site is pretty good, but gets old after 3-4 days so a 2-3 night stay is recommended.
In Ibadan, touristic sites include Bowers Tower and Mapo Hall but you should go with a guide to get enough context to appreciate it.
